New data shows recruitment is rising 🚀

This new research offers some hope for the recruitment and staffing industry. Everyone feels it’s been tough. Is there light at the end of the tunnel? After several quarters of decline, we see indications of stabilisation, and also evidence of which tactics and sectors are performing best. The report bases its findings on the earnings results of six of the world's largest staffing companies. Page Group, Kelly Services, Robert Half, Randstad, Korn Ferry, Manpower Group. This year, we see new developments.

The Savage Truth About Your Recruitment

The real confusion in recruitment right now is which 'sacred tactics' of the past remain relevant, and which need to be reinvented or dumped. It is tough to let go of what has served you well. But that is, in fact, your most significant risk. And of course, this includes AI and automation. But not only that. Much needs to change. That's what leaders and recruiters alike are getting wrong, right now, everywhere. Holding on to what is no longer valid. Slow to pivot, reinvent, and try fresh ideas.

Why the $1M recruiter lost it.

Three years ago, I warned recruiters to “fix the roof before the rain came.” Many didn’t—and paid the price. Too many let their business development muscles atrophy. That same warning applies now. AI will intensify the need for human connection, trust, and credibility. Strong client relationships will define who thrives, not who automates best. Don’t wait for the storm to hit again—get in front of your clients now. Reinforce your relationships, sharpen your value, and build future resilience. Automation will handle the hack work. Real recruiters must bring something only humans can.

My barista will beat your AI

Everyone wants to understand where the line between automation and humanity in recruitment actually is. That is made even more compelling by the simple fact (which most 'Techbros' do not get) that there is a big difference between understanding which parts of the recruitment process can be replaced by AI and automation and understanding which parts should be replaced by AI and Automation. And therefore, which parts should not! (Worth reading that again BTW). So, this story about David the Barista, which I have told before, has new relevance and resonance.

You must run towards the tech

How many webinars and podcasts on AI and recruitment can a recruiter take? I know. We are flooded with it! I like to think this one is a little different. From the perspective of a guy who was recruiting 16 years before the internet was invented! So, seen more change and disruption in recruitment than most. But not an old school view. Quite the opposite. The advice is given from a viewpoint embedded in a need for AI, and what it can do. But also – and this is the important part – what it should not do!

Grow Your Recruitment Business with this.

Many recruitment companies are in defensive mode. Plenty are shrinking. But it is in tough times that nimble businesses set the scene for growth. Is now your time? Scaling a recruitment business isn’t about working harder. Hard work is a given. It’s about working toward a plan and setting the right priorities. I’ve seen too many businesses fail to meet their goals because they lack focus, take on the wrong clients, or ignore key performance metrics. To scale successfully, follow this guide.

Make more placements from less orders

Not all job orders are created equal. Some are far more ‘fillable’ than others. A recruiter with 12 open orders does not spend one-twelfth of her time on each order. This is even more important when we have fewer orders than we would like to have. In desperation, some recruiters scramble to cover all of them. That will cause a lot of work for very little return. A smart recruiter will ‘triage’ their job orders, and to do that you have to know your ‘fillability- factor’. Do you?

My one big AI warning

I have a warning. And I have a non-negotiable recommendation. The world of AI is still full of hype and dominated by charlatans selling digital snake oil. Much of it isn't even real! There is a self-appointed army of AI experts, evangelists and so-called 'thought leaders'. They have never implemented AI in a recruitment environment. All they are doing is amplifying the claims of the snake-oil AI vendors. Beware! Many products on sale now actually automate dysfunction. Furthermore, many legacy traditional HR tools, CRM, and ATS products have increasingly flawed platforms. They sprinkle AI terminology and the occasional AI enhancement on top of what is, in reality, a dinosaur system.

What you sell can say ‘no’ 🙅🏾

This blog challenges the hype around “totally automated recruitment” pushed by tech founders who have never recruited or implemented recruitment tech. It urges recruiters to think critically about AI claims and separate reality from noise. By imagining a world where recruiters lose their laptops, we can clarify which tasks must remain human-driven and which can be supported by technology. Recruitment is unique: unlike products or tickets, talent is not a commodity and can say “no.” True recruitment success lies in balancing technology with human judgment, empathy, and influence — something automation alone cannot replace.
