What happens to non-billing middle managers in a downturn?

I am not predicting a downturn.

But it wouldn’t be a shock, would it?

And many companies will be badly hurt if it comes. Especially now after the long golden run we have had.

The danger is creating a fat layer of middle management who are no longer involved in sales or billing. What are all these ‘managers’ managing? What happens to them when revenue drops? (less than 2 minutes)

• What is the first thing big recruitment companies do when revenues start to fall, and they think a recession is on the way?
• The non-billing middle management is fired in droves!
• If they are no good to you in tough times, why were they valuable in the good times?
• Be careful about creating a layer of management who are no longer involved in any aspect of selling.
• A good Billing Manager protects you in a downturn.

I know of several companies like this. A troupe of non-billing middle managers with feet up on desks, flying first or business class from Australia to UK for "important meetings", going out for posh dinner after posh dinner at their employer's expense. All the while said employer is up to its eyeballs in debt and using a factoring company to pay its contractors. Or, worse still, is entirely unable to pay all its bills and is receiving financial life support from a parent company or sister company which happens to be profitable. Someone has to pay for all those Friday drinks, first class flights and posh dinners - and it isn't the billing consultants ;-) Yes my precious, the reckoning is coming. We shall see who has been swimming naked once the economic tide goes out!

Usually, far too late once a downturn comes and they have been out of the game for years, and on giant salaries, but yes, maybe
