Selling or lying? There’s no grey
The DNA of a great recruiter is a powerful mix of skills, competencies, attitudes, and mindsets, and I have written two books to help you decipher it.( Here and here )
But let’s dip into this a little.
Here is a glimpse of a great recruiting mindset
The recruiter says, “I filled 9 jobs out of 10,”
Then spends the whole weekend angsting over the one they lost.
Average recruiters? Well, for a start, they don’t fill nine out of ten, but if they did, they would be taking selfies for LinkedIn and preaching far and wide about how good they are.
Great recruiters come with all sorts of personalities. Some are very introverted people, while, of course, we often see the bouncy extrovert.
But neither of those raw profiles will be nearly enough. For example, there is always a high level of competitiveness underneath. Not in an unpleasant way, and not even to do with ‘the competition’ (although sure, we want to beat them when it’s a one-on-one tussle)
Watch the video snippet from the Savage Recruitment Academy training library and read the full story below.
I have never heard a great recruiter say, “Oh, I had a good week. I filled 2 jobs. I lost a couple, but you know, win some, lose some.” They don’t say things like that.
They are always looking to get better. And a Temp /Contract top recruiter? Almost pathological in their distaste for not filling the job!
I’ve also found that while elite recruiters are competitive, they have a ‘hunter mentality’.
They want to know everything, sniffing out information and asking questions. They just need to be ‘in the know’.
And this is crucial. Many people who could be great recruiters only end up being average because they forget that they’re dealing with people, and they forget that they’re dealing with people’s lives.
Great recruiters never forget that. They’re always looking for a positive outcome for all stakeholders—client, candidate and themselves. And if you want a long-term career in recruitment, that is non-negotiable.
There are many temptations to take shortcuts in our industry. We all know what they are and when they emerge; I advise you not to do so.
Here is a great business truth
There’s no grey line between selling and lying.
Make sure you work on the right side of that line
