Make more placements from less orders

Not all job orders are created equal. Some are far more ‘fillable’ than others. A recruiter with 12 open orders does not spend one-twelfth of her time on each order. This is even more important when we have fewer orders than we would like to have. In desperation, some recruiters scramble to cover all of them. That will cause a lot of work for very little return. A smart recruiter will ‘triage’ their job orders, and to do that you have to know your ‘fillability- factor’. Do you?

Most recruiters are missing the post-Covid reality.

There is a massive post-Covid reality that most recruiters are yet to ‘get’. So I will tell you. As recruiting gets ‘more remote’, you get ‘more engaged’. Sure candidates want (and in some cases must have) interviews on Zoom etc. Indeed I doubt we will ever go back to every candidate interviewed face to face. […]

Recruiters. You only have to get 5% better to bill 50% more.

Here is what I learned recruiting, managing and coaching recruiters. And I am now into my 5th decade of doing it! You only have to get 5 % better to bill 50% more. Roll that around on your tongue and let it sink in. The real value in recruitment is your influencing skills. Pretty much […]

What do you say if your Client uses The ‘C’ Word?

As the market recovers, misguided clients will try to push down agency fees. Under the flawed impression that ‘recruiting is easy now’ and ‘there are lots of candidates because of Covid’, some employers will try to leverage recruiters on fee, and they will use both old tactics and new. I have blogged about how you […]

My secret to a cracking start to 2021!

We all know it’s been the year from hell and many of us will have some kind of break in the next month or so. Christmas, New Year, summer holidays, Chinese New Year. You, your clients and your candidates are going to have some well-deserved downtime. But what about the cost? And the risk? We […]

What ‘The Dark Ages of Recruitment’ can teach us post-COVID

Every second article I see is about how recruitment will change post-COVID. Mostly it’s BS as the majority of recruiters will go back and do exactly as they have always done. I explained that here. Of course, the opportunity to make changes has never been better, and the smart ones in our industry are working […]

Recruitment is not Tinder. COVID screwed that.

Let’s be honest about our industry for a moment. Prior to the pandemic, technology and lack of skill drove plenty of recruiters to treat recruitment like a dating app. Swipe left. Swipe right. Post-COVID, you have a choice. Go back to being what you always were. A keyword-matching, resume-flicking, in-box spamming, transactional recruiting hack. (Ouch! […]

Drop your fees and triple your billings. Seriously

I wrote recently about my Post-COVID nirvana. How the recruitment industry can be re-invented, with massive benefits for clients, candidates and recruiters. My ‘dream’ includes killing off the scourge of contingent, multi listed-order recruitment, which drives much that is bad in our industry. Speed over price, short cuts, resume racing, fee-discounts, poor service to candidate […]

Go away PSA. Farewell PSL

You gotta love it when a plan comes together! This is a true tale. And it has a warning for the recovery after COVID. Precision Sourcing is an excellent medium-sized IT recruitment business in Sydney. I have been an Advisor on the Board for almost five years. When I joined, there was a big problem. […]

Grief is crippling recruiter crisis response to Covid-19

For many agencies, our response to COVID-19 is Ebne. Ebne is Edward de Bono’s invented word, so desperately right for today. EXCELLENT, But Not Enough. It’s understandable. We are all in ‘strategic grief’.
