The real secret to building a personal online brand

The modern recruiter knows that ‘brand’ is key.

And the smart modern recruiter knows how to amplify that brand via ‘personal digital marketing’.

This blog will get far less readers than my normal fare because anything to do with ‘social’ and ‘digital’ turns many dinosaur recruiters off, quick-smart.

But please, be wiser than that, because it’s not that hard. But it is that important.

The video tells in 5 minutes what it took me 10 years to learn. So, worth your time.

• Take a long term view: You don’t get fit, and stay fit, with one weeks gym-work, do you? Same with building a digital brand. It takes persistence and patience.

• You must be consistent: Every day you put out content. LinkedIn status updates, Tweets, blogs.

• Quality content is the key: Content is an opportunity to differentiate. You are different from the vast mass of recruiters who clients perceive as bland and beige. You are interesting, with a point of view, a thought-leader even! And to do that most of your content must be unique to you.

• You must build an audience: You must have targeted followers. There are ways to do that.

• Speak ‘to’ your audience: Your content must be interesting to the people you are trying to target.

• Be generous: Think ‘what can I give‘. Not always ‘what can I get‘. Share ideas, knowledge, tips. Introduce people to each other. Open doors. Be kind.

• Be authentic: Be real. Not blunt or rude. But be yourself. Be ‘you’. People can tell if you don’t, and will switch off.

• Engagement: Its not just broadcasting. You need to interact. Answer questions. Share other peoples stuff. Thank and congratulate. It is after all… social.

Building a brand is hard work. But it will pay bounteous dividends.

Always great stuff, Greg. Most of it I'm doing, but I'm still struggling with Twitter 5-10 times a day! Still, work in progress!

Use "Bufferapp" or "social oomph" to schedule tweets into the future Alex... just a few a day.. you compliment that with "real time " updates.. cheers Greg

All great Greg, but I personally love the 'be authentic' Candidates and clients see through 'fake' in an instance. We try to employ staff (amongst other things) who are the sorts we would personally like to receive a call from if we didn't know them. Those with a brilliant phone manner and it's obvious they really enjoy what they do!

I'd add 'narrowcasting' to the list - as an embellishment of your point on engagement. Pick out individual people for mention, whether it's in the form of a thank-you or a reply to their own content. This is especially effective for thought-leaders and by initiating contact you'll get attention yourself, plus they'll often respond in kind, with a namecheck.

Cheers Gregg, I liked this video. I tried running a small training session on building up an online presence with some of our newer starters and wished I'd re-watched this video first. Spot on! Covers everything off. Also agree on the buffer app. I paid for it for a while, then scaled down to normal as it was working fine. It's SUCH as useful too, that couple with google alerts... you can spend around half an hour per week (once up and running) and have an automated online presence for the rest of the week with content rich RELEVANT and news worthy articles for your audience to read. Automated sounds kind of out of place there ... but it REALLY helps with time management throughout the week. Thanks for the vid and tips!
